With the economy in current disarray and an ever-growing crisis in the housing and fuel markets, people are constantly looking for more effective ways to save money. While the value of homes and the dollar decrease, it's exceedingly important for people from all walks of life to be able to save as much cash as they can. Saving money is actually easier than many people may think. There are a few small changes you can make in your life to help cut corners and either build your savings or pay off debt.

Sometimes the most obvious changes are the most helpful. One of the best ways to save money each month is to get rid of the digital cable or satellite. Opt for basic cable, and subscribe to an online video rental service such as Netflix (which also saves on gas). You could save anywhere from $40-$100 or even more and still be able to watch movies and stay entertained. Another great way to save is to check with your cell phone provider and find out what kind of shared minutes plans they have available for your family. Often the cell phone companies don't tell you about the special rates they have; you have to ask for them. A quick toll-free call could put your cell phone bill on the fast track to savings. Another great idea: get rid of your landline. Since almost everyone uses cell phones these days, there's not a whole lot of sense in paying TWO phone bills monthly!

If your home uses an electric hot water heater, a great way to save some extra money on your monthly bill is to turn it off, and only turn it on when it's needed. It is a little known fact that the water heater is still ?úrunning??and using up power even when not in use. Many people claim this method of turning it off can help them save $50 or more per month on their electric bill alone! Be sure to consult a professional if you have any questions about this money saving method, but if you are looking to save a ton of money, it's a great way to go.

The price of food has become increasingly more expensive as well, but there are some things you can do to help cut costs. First, plan your meals for the week ahead. Then make an organized shopping list of everything you'll need.

Check the weekly sales fliers and cut coupons. Cook larger amounts of food like soups, spaghetti sauces, and other things, then store them in freezer containers, and take them out when you need them. Bring your lunch to work instead of going out. Do the math, and you'll be amazed at how much you have saved. Carpooling to work, getting regular maintenance on your car, and ensuring your have enough air in your tires can all be great gas savers. Little things add up, so take a tally of what you've saved and watch it grow.

You can do a lot of things with the money you save. If you have credit card debt, it's a good idea to take that extra money and start paying your unsecured debt down as quickly as possible. One the debt is paid, take the money and shop around for a high-yield savings account, CD, money market account, or other interest accruing method you can use to earn extra each month.

With a little bit of practice, you can save yourself a good amount of cash each month. Since the economy is weakening, you never know just how much of that money you might need for emergencies or other things later on down the line, which makes saving money a very smart move.
